Ghosts: Landguard Fort, Felixstowe

Readers, I confess when I saw Felixstowe I thought first of the Duchess of Windsor, but no, this is about a seriously haunted location.  Check out this fascinating story at Enjoy Felixstowe More, here: Landguard Fort Ghosts

Ghosts: A Haunted Church

Readers, I couldn’t find anything I liked today so I’m sharing one of my own personal ghost stories.

I studied at an English theological college (Ripon College Cuddesdon in Oxfordshire) and as part of rotating duties, it was my turn to serve as sacristan at the village church, a Norman building typical of those found locally.  It was late fall so it was dark when I opened the door with the huge ancient key and let myself in.  The church was quite open inside, there were no hidden rooms and the sacristy area was simply set off with a screen.

As I was preparing for the morning service, I heard footsteps.  As I had not heard the door open, I was sure I was alone (who else would be there at 6 am in the dark and chill?).  Looking round the screen, I still heard the footsteps, although I saw no one. The church was always very cold, even in summer, so I can’t say if there was a cold spot, but there was certainly a feeling of being watched. It was uncomfortable and unsettling.  I finished up and departed asap!

A note:  I always attended the church during service hours after that and when there were many others present, it didn’t feel at all creepy. But I spoke with fellow students and evidently the place was known to be haunted, and I was not the only one to have heard footsteps …
