Ghosts: My Own Personal Ghost Sighting!

Readers, today I’ll share my own, brand new ghost story!

A friend and I went to visit another friend, someone I’d never met.  The house is said to be haunted, the residents often see a ghostly man on the stairs, and have experienced and seen things upstairs.  Some folks wouldn’t go upstairs to find out!

We walked into the kitchen. The house has a warm, inviting energy.  One could see through a passageway into the next room and the bottom part of the stairs.  I saw someone there, at the foot of the staircase, getting ready to go outside. It was an old woman, who resembled someone from the forties and fifties.  She wore a wool dress coat and a scarf around her head.  I assumed she was a relative who lived in the home, and thought no more of it. It was only later that I realized the only (living) people at home were us, the friend, and her husband. No old ladies. Nor had any female ghosts been seen there. And no one went outside.

I called to share my story with the homeowner, who got a kick out of it – she had never seen the woman I described, although she often saw the man on the stairs.  She thought a moment and said it sounded like her grandmother, who wore a scarf on her head every day.  She asked me what the energy felt like when I walked into the house, and I said “Warm and fuzzy.”  So she was pleased, and I was, too … I’d seen a ghost!

Note: the ghost appeared solid and real.  The one odd thing was when we came in, it didn’t turn to look our way, as any living person would do when people come in.

That’s my story, and I’m stickin’ to it!

    • Thanks for your thoughtful comment. I think there are a wide variety of phenomena, some paranormal, some not, that pass as ghosts. It’s an intriguing field. This particular experience was very ordinary – until I realised no one had actually been there, nor had anyone who looked like that lived there. 🙂

    • Thanks, Alexis! I haven’t seen many ghosts – this one was so lifelike I had no idea until after seeing it that it wasn’t among the living at all! I like to share so I can get feedback from more knowledgeable people who may be reading, and from others who’ve had similar experiences. Thanks for reading – and I love your blog, BTW! 🙂

  1. What a wonderful experience for you!! It sounds like this comforting apparition was meant for your eyes only…you were ready to see and feel her energy, but then to also give comfort to her granddaughter. Since the ghost didn’t seem to notice the living then she is likely residual and has been doing her thing over and over… or perhap she is intelligent but used all of her energy to manifest so completely and with emotion there was no energy left for socializing. But you were in the right place at the right time, in any case, and in the right frame of mind, to be blessed with this ghostly sighting.

    • Thanks, Diane, for your thoughtful and perceptive comment – you are, as always, spot on! I agree that it is probably a residual – felt that way. It was a lovely thing to know who the ghost appeared to be and that it was meaningful to the people in the home.

  2. I’ve never actually seen a ghost, but I’ve visited many places where I could feel a definite “energy” about the place. Like battlefields. My there is just something heavy there that I can’t shake. Great share!

  4. My wife and I were near the cemetery at the Gettysburg battlefield about halfway through twilight: very quiet, but not yet too dark to see. Where had all the other tourists gone? And then a man came walking toward us, passing silently among the tombstones–and we just about plotzed. But a moment later he turned out to be just another tourist. Oh, well!

My wife did not see, but **heard** a ghost, once. Does that count? I’d have to let her tell the story, if she wants to. As one of your mobsters might say, “I ain’t nevuh seen nothin’.”

    • Thanks for sharing! Bet that got your attention! I’d love to hear her story sometime! I think auditory ghosts are more common than sighted ones – in an earlier post, I discussed living in a haunted house. We had company one night and everyone heard footsteps and doors opening and closing upstairs – but we were all downstairs in the dining room! I also heard footsteps in an ancient Norman church in Oxfordshire when I was sacristan there – very creepy, it was still dark and I was alone there except for that (and there was no one to be seen, just heard – and my ownshoes were rubber-soled, no noise, so it wasn’t any sort of echo). Many people remarked that the church was haunted, and they’d get no argument from moi. 🙂
